Wishart blasts PM Truss following IMF statement
Pete Wishart, MP for Perth and North Perthshire, has blasted PM Liz Truss and her government for causing economic chaos following the Chancellor’s recent mini-budget announcement. Mr Wishart’s comments come after the IMF released a damning statement which urged for the proposals to be reconsidered, and after the Bank of England was forced to make unprecedented interventions in an attempt to stabilise UK markets.
Commenting, Mr Wishart said:
“Ever since Brexit, we have all watched despairingly as the UK deteriorates in practically every respect. We have watched Tory corruption, sleaze and incompetence trash the reputation of our democracy. We have watched the government pursue destructive policies, from leaving the EU single market, to the Rwanda Scheme, to the scrapping of the Northern Ireland Protocol. With each passing crisis, we continually surmise that this must be rock bottom.
“Yet, here we are, 3 weeks into office, Liz Truss has crashed the pound, sent interest rates soaring and caused economic turmoil on an unprecedented scale. So bad that the Bank of England has been forced to make huge interventions, and that the IMF felt the need to publicly call for the Chancellor to reconsider his plans. This is the kind of statement you would expect the IMF to make about a developing country, not an advanced G7 nation.
“If the Prime Minister has any desire to prevent an outright collapse of the UK economy, she needs to immediately recall parliament and heed the warnings that are all around her to scrap her government’s senseless budget proposals.”
