WISHART CONGRATULATES MUIRHEAD ON OLYMPIC GOLD
Pete Wishart, MP for Perth and North Perthshire, has congratulated Eve Muirhead on leading her team to win an Olympic Gold medal in women’s curling.
Originally from Blair Atholl, this was Muirhead’s fourth Olympic Games. In the 2014 Sochi games, she won bronze.
Commenting, Mr Wishart said:
“I want to say a massive congratulations to Perthshire’s very own Eve Muirhead on leading her curling team to Olympic gold last week, which is the first time a Scottish athlete has won a gold medal at the Winter Olympics since 2002!
“Eve is a shining example of how hard work pays off. From growing up in Blair Atholl in a family of accomplished curlers, she went on to compete in her first Winter Olympic Games at just 19 years old.
“She won Bronze in the 2014 Sochi games, making her the youngest skip ever to win a Winter Olympic medal. Between then and the 2018 Pyeongchang games, she was diagnosed with coeliac disease and underwent a hip surgery, throwing her career into jeopardy. For her to overcome such adversity and go on to win Olympic Gold is a testament to her incredible tenacity.
“Also, a huge congratulations to Edinburgh’s Bruce Mouat and his team on winning Silver in men’s curling.
“For having a small population, Scotland really punches above its weight in elite sports, and it is fantastic to see our country’s athletic talent showcased on the international stage.”
