Pete Wishart MP encourages constituent to apply to join the net zero workforce

Pete Wishart calls on people in Perth and North Perthshire looking for apprenticeships to apply for roles that could help transform the UK energy sector and reach net zero climate targets.

The schemes are run by National Grid which sits at the heart of Great Britain’s energy system, keeping the lights on and gas flowing so people can go about their daily lives. Their research shows that the UK energy sector needs to recruit for 400,000 skilled jobs right across the country between now and 2050 to get the UK to net zero. 

They are currently looking to hire for their apprenticeship programmes which offer opportunities to foster and shape the skills needed for a green energy future through a mix of studying and hands-on experience, transforming the interest young people have in tackling climate change into a reality.

The schemes can set them on the path of a meaningful career and provide the right environment for them to become, for example, the civil, mechanical and electrical engineers or data analysts of tomorrow.

Commenting, Pete Wishart MP said:

“Energy sector apprenticeships are vital to building the workforce that will help the UK tackle climate change. We know young people are passionate about this agenda, and these programmes provide a great opportunity to be part of the generation finding solutions and delivering on climate ambitions at a critical time in the UK’s path to net zero.

“Through a mix of studying at university and practical training at National Grid’s first-class facilities in Eakring, they can explore different roles and develop their skills in a range of areas.

“I’d recommend that anyone looking for their next step to be in a meaningful role that can help achieve a greener future, apply today.”

Jade Kimpton, National Grid Apprentice said:

“I’m on the National Grid Level 4 higher apprenticeship, training to become a substation engineer. This programme provides on-the-field experience working on substation equipment, includes a range of training opportunities and I will also gain a Foundation degree in Electrical Power engineering.

“For anyone that’s thinking about applying, my advice is go for it and explore all the options available. Whether your preference is hands-on and practical, or more office based, there’s an apprenticeship in the energy sector for everyone.”

National Grid are the first apprenticeship provider to be rated ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted for three consecutive years.

The deadline for apprenticeship programmes is 27 February 2022.

Notes to Editors:

National Grid has apprenticeship roles across Gas Transmission and Electricity Transmission.

· Advanced Apprenticeships (Requirements: National 5s or equivalent)

o Also referred to as Level 3 apprenticeships and considered to be equal to two Higher passes.

o They're also open to people who may have already achieved a Level 3 qualification, including Highers, that want to develop work-based skills and experience.

o These programmes typically last 3-4 years and are a blend of formal studying and practical on-site activities.

o Training can range from maintaining electricity substations and high voltage equipment to maintaining pipelines, compressors and gas turbines.

· Higher Apprenticeships (Requirements: Highers or equivalent)

o Programmes typically last 2-3 years, involving part-time study at both college or university and training at our world-class training centre in Eakring. Individuals can gain a Level 4 qualification or above (e.g NVQ Level 4, Higher National Diploma, or foundation degree)

o Apprentices are responsible for the planning and delivery of a portfolio of work, with real responsibility from day one.

o Training can range from planning and managing the transmission network, investigating equipment failures, working with the network team on the technology that empowers National Grid, to planning construction of systems.
