Mr Pete Wishart MP, SNP Member of Parliament for Perthshire & North Perthshire, visited the Crieff Road Tesco in Perth today (Friday 3 July 2015) to help highlight their sixth Neighbourhood Food Collection in conjunction with the Trussell Trust and FareShare. Collections have also been taking place in all of Tesco’s larger stores across the country between 2rd – 44h July and in all Tesco Express stores between 22nd June – 4th July.
Mr Wishart said:
“This visit is a great opportunity to thank the staff of Tesco for the work they are doing in promoting their Neighbourhood Food Collections and to help publicise the need for donations to our local food banks both during this period and throughout the year.
“I am pleased to note that Tesco have extended the scale of their Neighbourhood Food Collection which now takes place over three days instead of just two and also includes a two-week collection in all their smaller stores.
“I understand that since October 2013 Tesco have worked with FareShare to donate surplus food from their online and fresh distribution centres which reduces food waste and has helped provide 2.8 million meals to the more than 1,700 charities and community projects that FareShare supports.
“Tesco have also now rolled out over 500 permanent collection points in their larger stores so that customers can donate food all year-round – a significant increase on the six that they had in 2013.
“There should be absolutely no need in our society for food banks but, as long as there is, I will give my support to all those whose generosity leads them to give of their time and effort to keep those food banks stocked and running.
“I hope that Tesco’s customers will make a special effort to donate to our local food banks but also that they will remember that there is a need for donations throughout the year.”
