WISHART WELCOMES SCOTCH WHISKY ACTION FUND TO TACKLE ALCOHOL HARM
Published date : 10 February, 2014
The Scottish National Party’s Mr Pete Wishart MP, Member of Parliament for Perth & North Perthshire has welcomed the launch by the Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) of a fund to tackle alcohol-related harm as it extends its commitment to addressing misuse and promoting responsible drinking.
The £500,000 Scotch Whisky Action Fund has been set-up by the SWA, the industry trade body, and complements the work of its members. A total of £100,000 is available each year from 2014 to 2018 to projects working to reduce alcohol-related harm in Scotland.
The fund will invest in projects from charities and other organisations that work to reduce the impact of alcohol-related harm in Scotland’s communities. The Scotch Whisky Action Fund is managed by Foundation Scotland, an independent charity.
Speaking today (Monday) Mr Wishart said:
“Whisky is an extremely important part of the economy locally and nationally and it is firmly embedded within our culture as our ‘national drink’ but we cannot be blind to the damage that misuse of alcohol and irresponsible drinking can and does cause.
“I am pleased, therefore, to welcome the establishment of this fund by the Scotch Whisky industry and hope that there are some local projects who will benefit from this money.”
