The Scottish National Party's Mr Pete Wishart MP, Member of Parliament for Perth & North Perthshire, turned Bingo Caller for an afternoon to highlight a campaign being launched to support a reduction in the tax on bingo.
Most gambling is taxed at 15% and yet bingo is taxed at 20%. To oppose this inequality, the Boost Bingo campaign is being launched at 350 bingo clubs across the UK including Premier Bingo, 53 South Methven Street, Perth PH1 5NU, where Mr Wishart called the numbers for a special game.
Mr Wishart said:
"Bingo is a game enjoyed by many, a social experience and an opportunity to meet or make friends but, like many other sectors, the industry has its difficulties. There is little new investment and over 1000 jobs have been lost since 2012.
"A big step could be taken in addressing that situation by levelling the playing field for bingo hall operators. Because game cards are sold and prizes are paid out, bingo is regarded as gambling but it is taxed at 20% while most other gambling pursuits are taxed at 15%.
"Removing that unfair discrimination against bingo would be a big boost to the industry and the current resident of 'Number Ten - Cameron's Den' and his neighbour, the Chancellor, had better start listening to the call that is going out today from bingo halls up and down the country."
