WISHART WELCOMES PASSING OF MONASTERY PLANNING APPLICATION

Published date : 24 October, 2012

Welcoming the decision today (Wednesday) by the Development Control Committee of Perth & Kinross Council to approve the planning application submitted by St Mary’s Monastery, Kinnoull, the Scottish National Party’s Mr Pete Wishart MP, Member of Parliament for Perth & North Perthshire, said:

“I very much welcome this decision.  I have given my personal backing to the Monastery’s development plans and it is good to see them getting the go-ahead.

“St Mary’s Monastery is an important part of Perth’s architectural heritage and as the first monastery built in Scotland after the Reformation has played a significant role in our country’s ecclesiastical history as well

“The Monastery attracts visitors to Perth from near and far but it was no exaggeration to say that its survival has been under threat because of the pressing need for redevelopment and upgrading.

“The approval of this planning application will allow them to raise the funds required to ensure that a centre which has served visitors and pilgrims for the past 141 years can continue to do so.

“I know that there were voices raised against the plans and I understand the worries that they have been expressing.  I sincerely hope that the amendment to the application which was also passed and the conditions that are to be applied will go some way to addressing or assuaging those genuine concerns.”
