PERTH POLITICIANS COMMENT ON AVIVA JOBS NEWS

Published date : 27 August, 2012

The Scottish National Party's Ms Roseanna Cunningham MSP, Member of the Scottish Parliament for Perthshire South & Kinross-shire and Mr Pete Wishart MP, Member of Parliament for Perth & North Perthshire, have responded to the news from Aviva today (Friday) regarding the next phase of their business restructuring which will mean the loss of a number of jobs across the company.

Ms Cunningham said:

“First and foremost, I hope that Aviva will continue to communicate and consult with their staff and I would stress the importance of ensuring that everything possible is done through redeployments and management of vacancies to avoid any actual redundancies.

“I have received an assurance from Aviva that no one geographic area or business sector will be disproportionately hit by these changes but I await with interest more precise details about the impact this will have on Perth

“Aviva have been flagging up these reductions for some time but obviously as the details emerge and the reality approaches, Aviva employees will be concerned to know exactly what these changes will mean for them.

Mr Wishart added:

“Aviva is an extremely important Perthshire employer and it is, of course, worrying - particularly for the staff themselves - whenever there is talk of restructuring or reductions in staff numbers.

“Pitheavlis already employs more people than it did back in the General Accident days and there has been a lot of talk about the scale of the business in Perth growing even further.

“I very much hope that this will not turn out to have been a promise of ‘jam tomorrow’ and as the company hones its efficiency and competitiveness through these changes I look forward to the benefits of the new structure paying off for Perth in the longer term.”
